๐ Why Test Fitness?
Reasons for fitness testing:
Identify strengths and weaknesses - find out which components of fitness need improvement
Monitor progress - compare test results over time to see if training is working
Set baseline scores - establish starting points for setting targets and designing training programmes
Compare against normative data - see how results compare to national averages for age and gender
Provide motivation - give performers targets to aim for and a sense of achievement
Assess suitability for a sport - determine if fitness levels meet the demands of a specific activity

Agility
Run through a course of cones set out in a 10m ร 5m grid, including changes of direction, slalom sections and acceleration. Timed to the nearest 0.1 second.
Stork Stand Test
Balance (static)
Stand on one foot with the other foot placed against the supporting knee. Hands on hips. Time how long balance is maintained without the foot moving or hands leaving hips.
Multi-Stage Fitness Test (Beep Test)
Cardiovascular endurance
Run 20m shuttles in time with audio beeps that get progressively faster. Continue until unable to keep up with the beeps on two consecutive occasions. Score is the level and shuttle reached.
Wall Toss Test
Coordination (hand-eye)
Stand 2m from a wall. Throw a tennis ball against the wall with one hand and catch it with the other. Count the number of successful catches in 30 seconds.
Sit and Reach Test
Flexibility (hamstrings, lower back)
Sit on the floor with legs straight and feet flat against the sit-and-reach box. Reach forward as far as possible without bending the knees. Measure the distance reached in cm.
Sit-Up Bleep Test
Muscular endurance (abdominals)
Perform sit-ups in time with audio beeps that get progressively faster. Continue until unable to maintain the required pace. Score is the level reached.
Vertical Jump Test (Sargent Jump)
Power (leg)
Stand side-on to a wall and reach up with one hand (standing reach). Jump as high as possible and touch the wall at the highest point. Subtract standing reach from jump height. Measured in cm.
Ruler Drop Test
Reaction time
A partner holds a 30cm ruler vertically, with the 0cm mark between the thumb and forefinger of the person being tested. The ruler is released without warning. The distance the ruler falls before being caught is measured. Convert distance to time using the formula t = โ(2d/g).
One Rep Max Test
Strength
Lift the heaviest weight possible for one complete repetition of an exercise (e.g. bench press, squat). The 1RM is the maximum weight that can be lifted once with correct technique.
30m Sprint Test
Speed
Sprint 30m from a standing start. Time the sprint using electronic timing gates for accuracy. Best of three attempts is recorded.
Handgrip Dynamometer Test
Strength (grip)
Squeeze a handgrip dynamometer as hard as possible. Record the score in kg. Best of three attempts for each hand is recorded.
๐ Normative Data
Normative data is a set of reference values (averages) that allow you to compare your test results against typical scores for your age and gender. Without normative data, a test score is just a number with no context.
Using Normative Data
If a 15-year-old male scores Level 10.5 on the Multi-Stage Fitness Test, this can be compared to normative data that shows the average for his age group is Level 8.2. This means he is above average for cardiovascular endurance. Without normative data, the score of 10.5 would be meaningless.
โ ๏ธ Limitations of Fitness Testing
Limitations: Fitness tests are not perfect measures. They have several limitations that must be considered:
Lack of specificity: Most tests are generic and don't replicate the exact demands of a specific sport. For example, the Illinois Agility Run tests general agility but not the specific agility patterns used in football.
Environmental factors: Surface, weather, temperature and venue can all affect results. A test run on grass will produce different results to one on a sports hall floor.
Practice effect: Participants may improve simply because they've practised the test, not because their fitness has improved. Familiarity with the test procedure can lead to better scores.
Motivation: Results depend on how hard the participant tries. A lack of motivation produces a lower score that doesn't reflect true fitness.
Measurement error: Inaccurate timing, equipment calibration issues or human error in recording can affect reliability.
Not sport-specific: Standard tests measure general fitness rather than the specific fitness required for a particular sport.
One-off testing: A single test may not represent true ability - fatigue, illness or stress on the day can affect results.
Limitation in Practice
A footballer takes the Multi-Stage Fitness Test and scores Level 9. However, the test only measures straight-line running endurance. Football requires repeated sprints, changes of direction and sport-specific movements. The beep test score doesn't fully reflect the footballer's match fitness. A more specific test might involve repeated shuttle sprints with turns.

Use sport-specific tests where possible - choose tests that closely match the demands of the performer's sport
Standardise conditions - same venue, same surface, same equipment, same time of day
Ensure adequate warm-up - participants must be physically prepared
Use trained testers - ensure those administering tests know the correct protocols
Test regularly - take multiple measures to identify trends rather than relying on a single score
Ensure maximum effort - motivate participants to give their best performance
Compare against relevant normative data - use data that matches the participant's age, gender and sport

The Multi-Stage Fitness Test is the most commonly tested - know it in detail
Understand the difference between validity (does it measure what it claims?) and reliability (is it consistent?)
