Quick recap: write 3 key points from Lesson 1 on pronouns and negation. Check them against the notes below.
Main Content (35 minutes)
Key Fact: This topic covers key vocabulary and structures for pronouns and negation. You need to know the topic vocabulary, be able to use it in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing), and express opinions with reasons.
GCSE Spanish Exam Tips: Direct object pronouns (lo, la, los, las) replace nouns. Indirect object pronouns (le, les) go before the verb. Double object pronouns follow a specific order (se lo, se la). Negation uses no before the verb; double negatives are required (no... nada, no... nunca).

Duration: 50 minutes

Command Words
Review what these command words require: state (one point), describe (say what happens), explain (say why), compare (both sides), evaluate (judgement).
A grade 9 answer will: use at least three tenses accurately; include complex structures (subordinate clauses, pronouns, negation); show precise grammar (agreement, conjugation, accents); express and justify opinions; include cultural knowledge; use a wide range of vocabulary; be well-organised with connecting words (sin embargo, además, por lo tanto, en conclusión). Mark scheme: Content (relevance and detail) + Quality of language (accuracy and range) = total marks
Exam Tips: Use a range of tenses (present, preterite, imperfect, future) to access higher marks | Include opinions with reasons (creo que... porque...) | Check adjective agreement (gender and number) before finishing | Use complex structures: negation (no...nada, no...nunca), pronouns (lo, la, los, las), conjunctions (sin embargo, además, por eso) | Include cultural references to Spanish-speaking countries | For writing: plan your response, check verb conjugations, re-read for errors
Common Errors: ✗ Forgetting adjective agreement — writing "ella es inteligent" instead of "ella es inteligente" ✓ All Spanish adjectives must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe: inteligente works for both, but many add -a for feminine (alto/alta, bueno/buena). ✗ Using the wrong tense — preterite for descriptions instead of imperfect ✓ Use the imperfect for ongoing past actions, descriptions and habits (era, tenía, hacía). Use the preterite for completed single events (fue, tuvo, hizo). ✗ Confusing ser and estar — both mean "to be" but are used differently ✓ Ser is for permanent characteristics, identity, time (es grande, es español). Estar is for temporary states, location, progress (es
