Key Fact: GCSE RS focuses on three types of crime: hate crimes, theft and murder. You need to understand religious responses to each type and whether people who break the law for moral reasons should be punished.
RS Exam Tips — Types of Crime: 1. For Types of Crime questions, always include specific scriptural or source references where relevant 2. Explain both religious and non-religious viewpoints 3. Use specialist vocabulary precisely (e.g. terms from the specification) 4. Evaluate by analysing strengths and weaknesses of different views before reaching your conclusion 5. Link your discussion of Types of Crime to its real-world impact on believers and society
UK Context: In the UK, debates about often involve both religious and secular voices. Parliament considers evidence from faith communities alongside scientific, legal and ethical perspectives, reflecting Britain’s commitment to both religious freedom and democratic decision-making.
UK Context: The British system of establishing laws through parliamentary debate, judicial interpretation and public consultation allows religious perspectives to be heard alongside other viewpoints. Faith communities regularly submit evidence to parliamentary committees and participate in public consultations on issues related to .
UK Context: British examiners specifically look for the use of specific scriptural references (e.g. Surah numbers, Bible chapter and verse) and named scholars or traditions. Vague references to ‘what Christians believe’ or ‘what Muslims think’ without specific evidence will not achieve the highest marks.
Term
Meaning
Example
Hate crimes
Crimes motivated by prejudice against race, religion, sexuality or disability
Both Christianity and Islam condemn prejudice — all humans are equal before God. Hate crimes violate the command to love your neighbour.
Theft
Taking property that belongs to someone else
Both traditions forbid theft (7th/8th Commandment; Qur'an). However, stealing from necessity (e.g. to feed a starving family) raises moral questions.
Murder
The unlawful killing of another person
Both Christianity and Islam consider murder a grave sin. "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13); "Whoever kills a soul... it is as if he had slain all mankind" (Surah 5:32).
Practice (10 minutes)
Q: Explain two religious responses to hate crime.
Answer: 1) Christianity teaches that all humans are made in God's image (Genesis 1:27) and are equal before God — "There is neither Jew nor Gentile... for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:28). Hate crimes contradict Jesus' command to "love your neighbour" and are always wrong. 2) Islam teaches that all humans are equal before Allah — "We created you from a single pair" (Surah 4:1). Racism and prejudice are forbidden, and the Qur'an celebrates human diversity as a sign of Allah's creativity. Hate crimes violate Islamic teaching on the dignity of every person.

Exam-Style Question
Attempt a past-paper style question on types of crime from the exam board past paper finder (see Resources), then mark it against the scheme.
Exam Tips: Always refer to specific sources of authority (scripture, sacred texts, religious leaders) | Explain contrasting beliefs — different views within and between traditions | Use key terminology precisely (e.g. tawhid, atonement, sanctity of life) | For 12-mark evaluation questions, consider both sides before reaching a justified conclusion | Link beliefs to their impact on individuals, communities and society | Acknowledge diversity — no religious tradition has a single, uniform view
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often confuse retribution with revenge. Wrong: "Retribution means getting revenge on criminals." Correct: "Retribution is punishment that is proportionate to the crime, based on justice and the principle that wrongdoers deserve punishment. Revenge is personal and emotional, often disproportionate. Retribution is a principle of justice; revenge is not."
