Practice (10 minutes)
Q: Explain two contrasting religious views on same-sex relationships.
Answer: 1) The Catholic Church teaches that homosexual acts are sinful because sex must be open to procreation within marriage. However, having homosexual feelings is not sinful — Catholics are called to practise chastity. 2) The Quakers (Religious Society of Friends) fully accept and bless same-sex relationships, arguing that God loves all people equally and that committed, loving relationships should be celebrated regardless of gender. Exam-Style Question
Attempt a past-paper style question on human sexuality and relationships from the exam board past paper finder (see Resources), then mark it against the scheme.
Exam Tips: Always refer to specific sources of authority (scripture, sacred texts, religious leaders) | Explain contrasting beliefs — different views within and between traditions | Use key terminology precisely (e.g. tawhid, atonement, sanctity of life) | For 12-mark evaluation questions, consider both sides before reaching a justified conclusion | Link beliefs to their impact on individuals, communities and society | Acknowledge diversity — no religious tradition has a single, uniform view
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often oversimplify religious views on relationships. Wrong: "All Christians oppose same-sex relationships." Correct: "While the Catholic Church teaches homosexual acts are wrong, many Protestant denominations (e.g. Quakers, United Reformed Church) accept and bless same-sex relationships. Views vary within and between traditions."
Stretch & Challenge (Grade 8-9):
Synoptic links: explain how human sexuality and relationships connects to another Religious Studies topic you have studied
Real-world: research one real-world use or example of human sexuality and relationships
Critical: "What are the limitations of the models used in human sexuality and relationships?"
