Key Fact: Hajj is the fifth Pillar of Islam — every Muslim who is physically and financially able must make the pilgrimage to Makkah at least once in their lifetime. Over 2 million Muslims perform Hajj each year during the month of Dhul-Hijjah.

UK Context: Approximately 25,000 British Muslims perform Hajj each year, according to the Council of British Hajjis. The British government works with Saudi authorities to facilitate the pilgrimage, and the UK Hajj Advisory Group provides guidance on travel, health and safety for British pilgrims.
UK Context: Malcolm X’s experience of Hajj in 1964 transformed his views on race. Writing from Makkah, he described seeing “blonde-haired, blued-eyed white-skinned Muslims” praying alongside Black Africans and Asians, all equal in ihram. This experience led him to reject the racial separatism of the Nation of Islam and embrace orthodox Sunni Islam’s message of universal brotherhood.
UK Context: The UK government’s Hajj Advisory Group, established in 2018, provides guidance on avoiding fraudulent travel operators, understanding Saudi health requirements and staying safe during the intense heat and crowds of the pilgrimage. In 2023, the group warned British pilgrims about temperatures exceeding 45°C during the Hajj season and advised on heat precautions.

This removes all distinctions of wealth, race and status, showing that all Muslims are equal before Allah. 2) Hajj brings forgiveness — Muslims believe a properly performed Hajj wipes out all past sins. Standing on the Plain of Arafat and sincerely repenting is the most powerful moment, when Muslims feel closest to Allah and experience his mercy.
