Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: issues & debates in psychology. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Psychology because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance. Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.

Main Content (35 minutes)
Key Fact: Nature vs nurture: nature argues behaviour is determined by inherited genes and biology; nurture argues behaviour is determined by experience and environment. Modern view: interactionism - both contribute. Epigenetics shows environmental factors can switch genes on/off, demonstrating that nature and nurture interact.
Key Fact: Free will vs determinism: free will argues people have conscious control over their choices; determinism argues behaviour is caused by factors beyond our control. Biological determinism (genes/neurochemistry), environmental determinism (conditioning), and psychic determinism (unconscious drives). Soft determinism (Bandura): some freedom within determined constraints.
Key Fact: Reductionism vs holism: reductionism explains behaviour by breaking it down into simpler components (biological reductionism: behaviour = brain chemistry). Holism argues the whole is greater than the sum of parts - behaviour must be understood as an integrated system. Reductionism is scientific but oversimplifies; holism is comprehensive but harder to test.
Key Fact: Ethnocentrism: judging other cultures by the standards of your own. Much research is WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, Democratic) and may not generalise. Example: Asch's conformity findings reflect 1950s America; collectivist cultures show higher conformity.
Key Fact: Gender bias: research that treats one gender as the norm (usually male = norm, female = deviation). Alpha bias: exaggerating differences between genders. Beta bias: minimising or ignoring differences. Examples: Kohlberg's moral development theory was based on male participants only; Milgram's study used only male participants but generalised to all people.
Psychology Exam Tips: When discussing issues and debates, always: take a balanced position, use specific examples from research, and acknowledge that most debates are not either/or but exist on a continuum. The interactionist position is usually best supported by evidence.

Addressing bias: use diverse samples, conduct cross-cultural research, include both genders, be aware of androcentrism (male-centred perspective), and report limitations of sample generalisability.

A grade 9 response will: define nature and nurture with evidence for each; explain why the debate is a false dichotomy (interactionism); present epigenetics as evidence for interaction (environment switches genes on/off); discuss the diathesis-stress model (genetic vulnerability + environmental triggers); evaluate using specific examples (depression: genetic predisposition + life events; phobias: biological preparedness + conditioning); conclude: the nature-nurture debate is largely resolved in favour of interactionism - both contribute to all behaviour. The question is no longer whether nature or nurture matters, but HOW they interact. Epigenetics provides the mechanism for this interaction, showing that the old nature-vs-nurture framework is outdated.
Exam Tips: Nature = biology. Nurture = experience. Modern answer: BOTH (interactionism, epigenetics). | Free will = we choose. Determinism = behaviour is caused. Soft determinism = influenced but not rigidly fixed. | Reductionism = break it down (scientific but oversimplified). Holism = see the whole picture (comprehensive but harder to test).
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: If behaviour is determined by biology and environment, then people cannot be held responsible for their actions. Correct: While determinism suggests behaviour has causes, this does not mean people lack all responsibility. Soft determinism (Bandura) argues we have conscious choice within constraints. The legal system recognises degrees of responsibility (diminished responsibility for mental illness). Free will may be limited rather than absent. Furthermore, understanding the causes of behaviour can INCREASE our ability to change it (e.g. CBT teaches people to challenge determinist thoughts). Determinism explains causes; it doesn't eliminate
