Teaching Script (35 mins):

Key Fact: Perception is the process of interpreting sensory information to make sense of the world. Sensation is detecting stimuli; perception is interpreting them - they are distinct processes.
Key Fact: Gregory's constructivist theory: perception uses past experience and expectations to interpret sensory input (top-down processing). Visual illusions support this - we misinterpret because we apply assumptions (e.g. the Muller-Lyer illusion).
Key Fact: Gibson's direct theory: perception is entirely determined by sensory input from the environment (bottom-up processing). We perceive affordances - what the environment offers us (e.g. a chair affords sitting). No past experience needed.

Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: Perception is entirely determined by the information available in the environment, so visual illusions cannot exist. Correct: Visual illusions clearly demonstrate that perception is not simply a direct read-out of environmental information - the brain must be interpreting sensory input using assumptions and expectations. Even Gibson acknowledged that illusions exist; he argued they are exceptions caused by unusual environments that trick normally reliable perceptual systems.
