Main Content (35 minutes)
Parent/Teacher Guide: Before lesson: Read the script below. Pre-teach key vocab: Psychology Exam Tips. If stuck: Re-read the revision notes (link above), then break the content into smaller steps. Extension: See the Stretch & Challenge ideas in Lesson 4.
Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: language & thought. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Psychology because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance. Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.

Main Content (35 minutes)
Key Fact: The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (linguistic relativity): the language we speak shapes how we think. Strong version (linguistic determinism): language completely determines thought. Weak version (linguistic relativity): language influences thought but doesn't completely determine it.
Key Fact: Piaget's view: thought precedes language. Children must understand a concept before they can use the word for it (e.g. they must understand conservation before they can talk about it). Language reflects cognitive development rather than driving it.
Key Fact: Vygotsky's view: language enables thought. Inner speech (talking to yourself) develops from social speech and helps organise thinking. Language and thought initially develop separately, then merge around age 2 - language becomes a tool for thinking.
Key Fact: Evidence for language influencing thought: the Dani tribe had only two colour terms yet could discriminate between colours (Heider & Rosch) - challenges the strong version. However, English speakers find it easier to remember colours they have names for - supports the weak version.
Key Fact: Bilingualism research: bilingual speakers may think differently depending on which language they are using - supports linguistic relativity. However, universal cognitive abilities (e.g. counting, spatial reasoning) exist across all languages.
Psychology Exam Tips: When evaluating language-thought theories, consider: can we think without language? (Yes - images, emotions, music.) Does language influence ALL thinking? (No - basic cognition is universal.) Are lab studies of colour perception relevant to complex thought? (Limited.)

A grade 9 response will: outline the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (strong and weak versions); present evidence for language influencing thought (colour studies, bilingualism, spatial language); present evidence against (universal cognition, image-based thinking, animal cognition); evaluate Piaget vs Vygotsky on the direction of influence; conclude: language and thought interact - thought is not completely independent of language (weak relativity is supported), but language does not determine thought (strong determinism is not supported). Thought is shaped by both cognitive development and linguistic experience.

Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: People who speak different languages think in completely different ways and cannot understand each other's concepts. Correct: While language influences thought, universal cognitive abilities exist across all cultures - counting, spatial reasoning, basic emotions. People can learn new concepts even without words for them (the Dani tribe learned new colour categories). The weak version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is supported: language makes certain thoughts easier, but it does not make them impossible.
