Main Content (35 minutes)

Somatotypes: A system of classifying body types based on physical characteristics. There are three main somatotypes: endomorph, mesomorph and ectomorph. Most people are a blend of all three, with one type being dominant.
Endomorph: A somatotype characterised by a high proportion of body fat, a wide waist and hips, and a rounded, soft body shape. Endomorphs tend to store fat easily and find it difficult to lose weight.
Mesomorph: A somatotype characterised by a muscular, athletic build with broad shoulders, narrow waist and low body fat. Mesomorphs gain muscle easily and have a naturally strong, powerful physique.
Ectomorph: A somatotype characterised by a lean, thin build with low body fat and low muscle mass. Ectomorphs are typically tall and slender with narrow shoulders and a fast metabolism.
Key Principle: Very few people are purely one somatotype. Most individuals - and most athletes - are a blend of all three, with one type being dominant. The blend determines which sports they are best suited to.

The extra weight provides a low centre of gravity, making them difficult to move or tackle. Without sufficient body mass, a prop would be pushed back in the scrum, undermining the entire forward pack.

Q3: Why is an ectomorph the ideal somatotype for a marathon runner?

Answer: An ectomorph is ideal for marathon running because their low body weight reduces the energy cost of every stride - carrying less mass over 26.2 miles requires significantly less energy than a heavier build. Their light frame means less impact force on joints, reducing injury risk over the high mileage of training and racing. The lean build is more efficient for thermoregulation (heat dissipation) during prolonged exercise. Their long limbs can provide an efficient stride length without the burden of excess muscle or fat weight.

Q4: A basketball player is tall, lean and muscular. Which two somatotypes are blended and why?

Answer: A basketball player blends ectomorph and mesomorph somatotypes. The ectomorph component provides height, long limbs and a lean build - essential for reaching the basket, covering the court quickly and having a stride advantage. The mesomorph component provides muscular power for jumping, sprinting and the physical contact of defending and rebounding. Pure ectomorphs would lack the strength for the physical demands, while pure mesomorphs might not have the height and reach advantages.

Q5: Explain why most athletes are not purely one somatotype. Use a specific sporting example.

Answer: Most athletes are not purely one somatotype because different sports require a combination of physical characteristics that no single somatotype provides alone. For example, a rugby winger needs the muscular power of a mesomorph for tackling and acceleration, combined with the lean, lightweight qualities of an ectomorph for sprinting speed. A pure mesomorph would be too heavy for the speed required, while a pure ectomorph would lack the strength for tackles. The mesomorph-ectomorph blend creates the ideal build: strong enough for contact but lean enough for pace.
