Key Fact: There are 10 components of fitness that you need to know for GCSE PE. They are divided into health-related and skill-related components.
Definition: The ability of the heart, lungs and blood vessels to deliver oxygen to working muscles over a prolonged period of time.
Definition: The ability of a muscle or group of muscles to sustain repeated contractions, or to continue applying force against a fixed object, over a period of time.
Definition: The range of movement possible at a joint.
Definition: The maximum force a muscle or group of muscles can exert in a single maximal contraction.
Definition: The ability to exert a maximal force in the shortest possible time. It is a combination of strength and speed.

Parent/Teacher Guide: Let your student attempt each question alone first, then compare with the model answer. Award method marks for correct working even if the final answer is wrong.

Q1: Define cardiovascular endurance and give a sporting example where it is the most important component.

Answer: Cardiovascular endurance is the ability of the heart, lungs and blood vessels to deliver oxygen to working muscles over a prolonged period. Example: marathon running, where the athlete must sustain aerobic exercise for over 26 miles.

Q2: Explain the difference between strength and power.

Answer: Strength is the maximum force a muscle can exert in a single maximal contraction. Power is the ability to exert a maximal force in the shortest possible time (strength × speed). Strength involves maximum force regardless of speed; power requires force to be applied QUICKLY.

Q3: Define agility and give two sporting examples.

Answer: Agility is the ability to change direction quickly and precisely while maintaining balance and control. Examples: a footballer dribbling past a defender with quick changes of direction; a tennis player changing direction to reach a wide shot.

Q4: What is the formula linking power, strength and speed?

Answer: Power = Strength × Speed.

Q5: Explain the difference between static and dynamic balance, giving a sporting example of each.

Answer: Static balance is maintaining the body's centre of mass above the base of support while stationary (e.g. a gymnast holding a handstand on the beam). Dynamic balance is maintaining the body's centre of mass above the base of support while moving (e.g. a rugby player staying on their feet while being tackled).

Q6: Define reaction time and explain why it is important for a sprinter at the start of a race.

Answer: Reaction time is the time taken to initiate a response to a stimulus. For a sprinter, it is the time between hearing the starting gun and beginning to push off the blocks. A faster reaction time means the sprinter gets out of the blocks sooner, giving them an advantage in a race decided by hundredths of a second.

Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often think fitness and health are the same thing. Wrong: Fitness and health are the same thing Correct: Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being (WHO). Fitness is the ability to meet the demands of the environment. You can be fit but unhealthy (e.g. a marathon runner with flu). Students often think static stretching is the best warm-up. Wrong: Static stretching is the best warm-up Correct: Current evidence suggests dynamic stretching is more effective in warm-ups as it mimics sporting movements. Static stretching may actually reduce power output if held too long before activity. Students often think no pain, no gain is a good training principl
