Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: planes and axes of movement. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Physical Education because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Main Content (35 minutes)
Plane of movement: An imaginary flat surface that divides the body into sections. Movement occurs ALONG or PARALLEL to a plane.
Axis of movement: An imaginary line around which the body or body part rotates. The axis is always PERPENDICULAR (at 90°) to the plane of movement.
Sagittal Plane: Divides the body into left and right halves. Movement in this plane involves flexion and extension - forward and backward movements.
Transverse Axis: Runs from left to right through the body. The body or body parts rotate around this axis when performing flexion and extension movements.
Frontal Plane: Divides the body into front and back (anterior and posterior) halves. Movement in this plane involves abduction and adduction - side-to-side movements away from and towards the midline.
Sagittal Axis: Runs from front to back (anterior to posterior) through the body. The body or body parts rotate around this axis when performing abduction, adduction and lateral movements.

Answer: Sagittal plane - divides the body into left and right halves. Frontal plane - divides the body into front and back halves. Transverse plane - divides the body into top and bottom halves.
Q2: Which plane and axis are used when performing a forward somersault?
Answer: A forward somersault occurs in the sagittal plane (the body rotates forwards, dividing left from right) around the transverse axis (the body rotates around an axis running from left to right through the hips).
Q3: Explain why a cartwheel occurs in the frontal plane around the sagittal axis.
Answer: A cartwheel occurs in the frontal plane because the body rotates sideways (dividing front from back) and around the sagittal axis (the body rotates around an axis running from front to back through the body's centre). The arms and legs abduct and adduct as the body turns sideways.
Q4: A discus thrower rotates before releasing the implement. Name the plane and axis of this movement.
Answer: The discus thrower rotates in the transverse plane (dividing top from bottom) around the longitudinal axis (the rotation occurs around a vertical axis running from head to feet through the spine).
Q5: What types of movement occur in the sagittal plane? Give a sporting example.
Answer: The sagittal plane involves flexion and extension movements (forward and backward). Example: during running, the legs flex and extend at the hip and knee in the sagittal plane; during a sit-up, the trunk flexes and extends.
Q6: Explain the relationship between a plane of movement and its corresponding axis.
Answer: The axis of movement is always perpendicular (at 90°) to its corresponding plane. The axis is the imaginary line around which the body rotates, while the plane is the imaginary surface through which the movement occurs. For example, the transverse axis (left to right) is at 90° to the sagittal plane (which divides left from right).

Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often think second class levers are the most common in the body. Wrong: Second class levers are the most common in the body Correct: Third class levers are the most common in the human body (e.g. biceps curl, hamstring kick).
