Review Previous Lesson

Quick recap: write 3 key points from Lesson 1 on media & technology. Check them against the notes below.

Main Content (35 minutes)

Key Fact: Technology has always shaped media — from the printing press to broadcast radio to the internet. Each technological shift transforms how media is produced, distributed, and consumed.
Key Fact: Digital transformation: the shift from analogue to digital has affected every media form — digital cameras, non-linear editing, streaming, online publishing, and social media.
Key Fact: Convergence: smartphones combine multiple media forms (camera, music player, social media, web browser, TV). This has changed audience behaviour — we carry entire media libraries in our pockets.
Key Fact: Streaming revolution: Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ have disrupted cinema, broadcast TV, and physical media. Content is available on demand, anywhere, on any device.
Key Fact: Social media as a media platform: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube are now major media distributors, reaching billions of users. They blur the line between producer and audience.
Key Fact: Algorithmic distribution: social media and streaming platforms use algorithms to personalise content feeds, creating filter bubbles and influencing what audiences see.

Extended Answer

Extended question: Full-Mark Response Evaluate the impact of digital technology on media audiences. [15 marks] <div class="

Digital technology has transformed how audiences access, consume, and participate in media, creating both empowerment and new vulnerabilities. The most significant change is the shift from scheduled to on-demand consumption. Streaming services allow audiences to watch what they want, when they want, on any device. This gives audiences unprecedented choice and control over their media experience. Social media enables participation — audiences are now prosumers who create and share content as well as consuming it. However, this control is partly illusory. Algorithms determine what content appears in feeds and recommendations, creating filter bubbles where audiences see content that reinforces their existing views. The attention economy designs platforms to maximise engagement, using psychological techniques (autoplay, notifications, infinite scroll) that can lead to compulsive use. This is particularly concerning for younger audiences. Digital technology has also increased access to diverse content. Audiences can discover global media, niche interests, and alternative voices that traditional media gatekeepers would not have distributed. Streaming services commission content for diver

Exam Tips: Always link technology changes to specific media forms and CSPs | Discuss both the opportunities and the risks of technological change | Consider the digital divide — not everyone benefits equally
Common Errors: ✗ Technology always improves media. ✓ Technology creates opportunities (more access, diverse content, new forms) but also risks (misinformation, addiction, privacy loss, digital divide). The impact of technology is ambivalent, not uniformly positive. ✗ AI will replace all media professionals. ✓ AI automates some tasks (recommendations, basic reporting) but cannot replicate human creativity, editorial judgement, or investigative journalism. AI is a tool that changes rather than replaces human roles in media production. ✗ Everyone has equal access to digital media. ✓ The digital divide means access varies by age, income, location, and disability. Approximately 10% of UK adults have never used
Stretch & Challenge (Grade 8-9):
  • Synoptic links: explain how media & technology connects to another Media Studies topic you have studied
  • Real-world: research one real-world use or example of media & technology
  • Critical: "What are the limitations of the models used in media & technology?"
