Key Fact: Ethnic representation in media has historically marginalised, stereotyped, or excluded people of colour, but recent years have seen significant improvement.
Key Fact: Traditional stereotypes: Black men as criminals or athletes; Asian people as terrorists or 'model minorities'; Latino people as criminals or domestic workers; Middle Eastern people as terrorists.
Key Fact: Underrepresentation: ethnic minorities have been proportionally underrepresented in mainstream media, particularly in lead roles, directing, and writing positions.
Key Fact: Tokenism: including a single ethnic minority character to appear diverse without giving them meaningful development or narrative importance. Token characters are often stereotypical.
Key Fact: Positive representation has improved: Black Panther, Crazy Rich Asians, and other films with majority ethnic minority casts have proven commercial viability, challenging assumptions about audience preferences.

The representation of ethnicity in media products is shaped by the institutional context, target audience, and cultural moment of production. In many contemporary CSPs, ethnic minority representation has improved from historical stereotyping. Producers increasingly recognise that diverse audiences want to see themselves reflected in media, and that authentic representation is commercially viable. However, the quality of representation varies. Applying Alvarado's categories reveals that some representations still fall into reductive patterns: the 'exotic' other, the 'dangerous' threat, or the 'humorous' sidekick. These stereotypes persist because they serve familiar narrative functions and align with some audience expectations. More progressive representations show ethnic minority characters as complex, multi-dimensional individuals whose ethnicity is part of — but not the entirety of — their identity. This avoids the trap of reducing characters to their race while acknowledging the cultural specificity of their experience. The institutional context matters.
