Exam Tips: Clastic classification by grain size: clay to shale, silt to siltstone, sand to sandstone, gravel to conglomerate | Conglomerate = rounded; Breccia = angular, rounding indicates transport distance | Graded bedding = turbidity current (decreasing grain size upward) | Cross-bedding and ripple marks indicate current direction and environment
Common Errors: ✗ Sedimentary rocks form from cooling magma ✓ Sedimentary rocks form from the accumulation and lithification of sediment, they are NOT related to magma or volcanic activity ✗ All limestone is chemical ✓ Limestone can be chemical (precipitated from solution), biochemical (formed from shell/coral fragments), or even clastic (reworked limestone fragments) ✗ Compaction alone turns sediment into rock ✓ Compaction reduces pore space but cementation is also needed to bind the grains together into solid rock, both processes are required for lithification
