Exam Tips: Key environments: fluvial, aeolian, shallow marine, deep marine, glacial | Sorting: aeolian = very well sorted; glacial = poorly sorted; fluvial = moderate | Graded bedding = deep marine turbidite; Cross-bedding = fluvial or aeolian | Dropstones and till = glacial; Bioclastic limestone = shallow marine
Common Errors: ✗ Cross-bedding only forms in desert environments ✓ Cross-bedding forms wherever currents (wind or water) deposit sediment on the sloping face of dunes or ripples; it occurs in aeolian, fluvial and shallow marine environments ✗ All sandstone is formed in deserts ✓ Sandstone forms in many environments: fluvial (river channels), aeolian (desert dunes), shallow marine (beaches), and deep marine (turbidites); the sorting, bedding structures and fossils distinguish them ✗ Till is sorted by the glacier ✓ Till is unsorted (all grain sizes mixed together) because glaciers dump all their sediment load simultaneously when they melt, unlike rivers which sort sediment by size during transport
