Key Fact: Fossils are the preserved remains or traces of organisms that lived in the geological past
Key Fact: Modes of preservation: original material (amber, freezing), replacement (petrification), permineralisation (mineral-filled pores), mould and cast, compression (carbon film)
Key Fact: Trace fossils preserve evidence of activity: footprints, burrows, coprolites, rather than the organism itself
Key Fact: Body fossils preserve part of the organism: shells, bones, teeth, soft tissues (rare)
Key Fact: Fossils indicate palaeoenvironments: coral = warm shallow sea; ferns = humid land; glacial deposits = cold climate

Attempt a past-paper style question on fossils & palaeontology from the exam board past paper finder (see Resources), then mark it against the scheme.

Exam Tips: Five preservation modes: original, replacement, permineralisation, mould/cast, compression | Body fossil = the organism; Trace fossil = the activity | Fossils = palaeoenvironment indicators (coral = warm shallow sea, etc.) | Fossil record is incomplete: rapid burial and hard parts favour preservation
Common Errors: ✗ Fossils are only found in sedimentary rocks ✓ While most fossils are in sedimentary rocks, trace fossils can be found in igneous rocks (e.g. dinosaur footprints in volcanic ash), and some exceptional preservation occurs in other settings ✗ All parts of an organism can fossilise equally ✓ Hard parts (shells, bones, teeth) fossilise far more readily than soft tissues, which is why the fossil record is biased toward organisms with hard skeletons ✗ A mould and a cast are the same thing ✓ A mould is the hollow impression left by the organism; a cast is the mineral fill that forms inside the mould, creating a 3D replica of the original organism
