Key Concept: Resources are the materials and services that people need to survive and maintain a good quality of life. The three fundamental resources are food, water, and energy. Access to these resources varies enormously across the globe and within countries.
Key Point: Resource distribution is uneven due to physical factors (climate, geology, rainfall), economic factors (wealth, technology, infrastructure), and political factors (governance, conflict, trade policies). The relationship between resource availability and development is two-way: poverty limits access to resources, and poor resource access perpetuates poverty.
Definition: Food miles measure the distance food travels from production to consumption. Higher food miles mean greater carbon emissions from transport, contributing to climate change.
Definition: Agribusiness is large-scale, commercial farming that uses technology, chemicals, and economies of scale to maximise production and profit. It contrasts with traditional small-scale farming.
Key Problem: The areas of highest water demand (south and east England, where population is concentrated) have the lowest rainfall. The areas of highest rainfall (Wales, northern England, Scotland) have lower demand. This mismatch creates supply problems, especially during droughts.

Answer: Advantages: agribusiness produces high yields efficiently through mechanisation and economies of scale; it provides cheaper food for consumers; it increases UK food security by producing 60% of food needs. Disadvantages: it causes environmental damage (chemical runoff causing eutrophication, soil degradation, biodiversity loss from monoculture); it reduces rural employment through mechanisation; it consolidates small farms into large operations, changing rural communities.

Q4: Explain the water supply-demand imbalance in the UK and how water transfer schemes help.

Answer: The UK's water supply-demand imbalance exists because areas of highest demand (south and east England, densely populated) have the lowest rainfall, while areas of highest rainfall (Wales, north, Scotland) have lower demand. Water transfer schemes address this by moving water from surplus to deficit areas. For example, Kielder Water in Northumberland stores water and transfers it to Tyne and Wear via pipelines. However, transfers are expensive to build, can cause environmental disruption, and may transfer invasive species.

Q5: How has the UK's energy mix changed since 1990? Explain the reasons for these changes.

Answer: Since 1990, the UK's energy mix has shifted dramatically from fossil fuels to renewables. Coal fell from 67% to 1% due to climate change targets and the carbon tax; renewables (especially wind) grew from under 2% to over 40%, supported by government subsidies and falling technology costs; gas remained important at around 34%, replacing coal as the dominant fossil fuel; nuclear declined slightly as old plants closed. These changes were driven by climate change legislation (Climate Change Act 2008, net zero by 2050), EU renewable energy targets, and the declining competitiveness of coal.

Answer: A balanced view recognises both the benefits and challenges of energy self-sufficiency. Self-sufficiency would increase energy security (reducing vulnerability to imported gas price shocks, as seen in 2022), reduce dependence on potentially unreliable suppliers, and create domestic jobs in renewables and nuclear. However, complete self-sufficiency is unrealistic and potentially undesirable: the UK still needs some gas during the transition; international trade in energy provides flexibility; some energy imports (e.g. from Norway's hydropower) are low-carbon; and the cost of total self-sufficiency would be enormous. A more realistic goal is diversifying supply sources and maximising domestic renewable generation.
