Lesson 1: Introduction: spelling rules and patterns
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Quick Recall
Write down everything you already know about spelling rules and patterns. Then check against the key terms: AO6 Requirement, Exceptions to remember, English Terms. Use a mini-whiteboard or paper.
Main Content (35 minutes)
Parent/Teacher Guide: Before lesson: Read the script below. Pre-teach key vocab: AO6 Requirement, Exceptions to remember, English Terms. If stuck: Re-read the revision notes (link above), then break the content into smaller steps. Extension: See the Stretch & Challenge ideas in Lesson 4.
Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: spelling rules and patterns. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of English Language because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance. Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.

Start with the revision notes summary, then attempt: Which is correct: "their book" or "there book"?
Plenary (5 minutes)
Check Out

Lesson 2: Core Concepts: spelling rules and patterns
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Review Previous Lesson
Quick recap: write 3 key points from Lesson 1 on spelling rules and patterns. Check them against the notes below.
Main Content (35 minutes)
AO6 Requirement: Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate spelling and punctuation. Spelling errors can cost you marks across all writing questions.
Tip: When in doubt, write the word down. Often your eye will catch an error that your brain misses.
Spelling Exam Strategy: Spelling accuracy directly affects your AO6 mark (16 marks). Frequent errors can cap you at Level 1 or 2, regardless of how good your content is. Before the exam: Memorise the top 10 commonly misspelt words (accommodation, separate, definitely, necessary, occurrence, beginning, disappear, environment, privilege, embarrass). Learn the mnemonic for each. During writing: If you're unsure how to spell a word, use a simpler alternative you can spell correctly. "Huge" is better than a misspelt "collosal". Accuracy always beats ambition. Proofreading (last 5 minutes): Read through your work specifically looking for spelling errors. Check homophones (their/there/they're, your/you're, its/it's) — these are the most common and most easily fixed errors. Mark allocation: AO6 Level 4 (13-16 marks) requires "accurate" spelling. Level 2 (5-8 marks) describes "some errors." Even 3-4 spelling mistakes can drop you a whole level. What examiners look for: Consistent accuracy, especially with high-frequency words and subject terminology. They don't expect perfection on every obscure word, but basic errors (their/there, seperate) are heavily penalised.

Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Command Words
Review what these command words require: state (one point), describe (say what happens), explain (say why), compare (both sides), evaluate (judgement).
Main Content (35 minutes)
Exam-Style Question
Attempt a past-paper style question on spelling rules and patterns from the exam board past paper finder (see Resources), then mark it against the scheme.
Exam Tips: Proofread your work - leave 2-3 minutes at the end | Circle words you're unsure about and come back to them | Use alternative words if you can't spell something | Memorise the top 10 commonly misspelt words | Practise homophones - they catch many students out | Check subject-specific vocabulary in context
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often write "could of" and "should of" instead of "could have" and "should have". Wrong: "I could of gone to the party if I had finished my work." Correct: "I could have gone to the party if I had finished my work." — "of" sounds like the contracted "'ve" but is grammatically incorrect. Students often confuse homophones — words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings. Wrong: "Their going to the park over they're to play with there dog." Correct: "They're going to the park over there to play with their dog." — they're = they are, there = place, their = belonging to them. Students often misspell double-letter words by forgetting one of the pairs. Wrong
