Lesson Overview
Total Lessons: 4 Tier: Foundation and Higher Duration: 50 minutes per lesson (200 minutes total) Exam Boards: AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, CCEA
Key vocab to pre-teach: key terms from mechanical systems
Basic skills: reading the summary notes and answering the practice questions there
Materials & Equipment
Exercise book, coloured pens

Printed revision notes (link below)
Internet for videos (see Resources)
Lesson 1: Introduction: mechanical systems
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Quick Recall
Write down everything you already know about mechanical systems. Then check against the key terms: key terms from mechanical systems. Use a mini-whiteboard or paper.
Main Content (35 minutes)
Parent/Teacher Guide: Before lesson: Read the script below. Pre-teach key vocab: key terms from mechanical systems. If stuck: Re-read the revision notes (link above), then break the content into smaller steps. Extension: See the Stretch & Challenge ideas in Lesson 4.
Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: mechanical systems. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Engineering because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance. Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.
First Look
Start with the revision notes summary, then attempt: explain the key ideas of mechanical systems
Plenary (5 minutes)
Check Out
Your student states one thing they learned and one question they still have about mechanical systems.
Lesson 2: Core Concepts: mechanical systems
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Review Previous Lesson
Quick recap: write 3 key points from Lesson 1 on mechanical systems. Check them against the notes below.
Main Content (35 minutes)
Key Fact: Mechanical systems transmit and convert forces and motion using mechanisms such as gears, levers, cams and pulleys.
Key Fact: Linkages convert one type of motion to another: a bell crank converts linear motion to rotary motion; a push-pull linkage transmits motion around a corner.
Key Fact: Gear trains transmit rotary motion between shafts: spur gears for parallel shafts, bevel gears for perpendicular shafts, worm gears for right-angle high-ratio drives.
Key Fact: Gear ratio = Number of teeth on driven gear / Number of teeth on driver gear; it determines speed and torque multiplication.
Key Fact: Mechanical advantage (MA) = Load / Effort; velocity ratio (VR) = Distance moved by effort / Distance moved by load; efficiency = MA / VR x 100%.
Key Fact: Cams convert rotary motion to reciprocating (linear) motion; the cam profile determines the follower's movement pattern.
Practice (10 minutes)
Q: explain the key ideas of mechanical systems
Answer:
Plenary (5 minutes)
Explain Back
Your student teaches the key points back to you without looking. Fill any gaps immediately.
Lesson 3: Application: mechanical systems
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Quick Recall
Recall the key terms: key terms from mechanical systems. Define each in one sentence.
Main Content (35 minutes)
Parent/Teacher Guide: Let your student attempt each question alone first, then compare with the model answer. Award method marks for correct working even if the final answer is wrong.
Work through the practice questions on the revision notes page for this topic.
Plenary (5 minutes)
Error Review
Review any questions answered incorrectly. Identify whether the error was knowledge, method, or reading the question.
Lesson 4: Exam Practice: mechanical systems
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Command Words
Review what these command words require: state (one point), describe (say what happens), explain (say why), compare (both sides), evaluate (judgement).
Main Content (35 minutes)
Exam-Style Question
Attempt a past-paper style question on mechanical systems from the exam board past paper finder (see Resources), then mark it against the scheme.
Exam Tips: Gear ratio calculations are very common: always show the formula, substitute values and state the effect on speed and torque. | Distinguish between MA (force ratio) and VR (distance ratio) — efficiency links them. | When describing linkages, name the type (bell crank, push-pull, reverse motion) and the motion conversion. | In cam questions, describe the cam profile and the resulting follower movement pattern. | Always explain that idler gears reverse direction without changing the gear ratio.
Common Errors: ✗ A higher gear ratio always means more speed. ✓ A gear ratio > 1 means the driven gear is slower but has more torque; a gear ratio < 1 means it is faster with less torque. ✗ Mechanical advantage and velocity ratio are the same thing. ✓ MA = Load / Effort (accounts for friction); VR = effort distance / load distance (theoretical, friction-free). Efficiency = MA / VR. ✗ All levers give a mechanical advantage greater than 1. ✓ First-class levers can have MA less than 1 (e.g. tweezers). Only second-class levers always have MA > 1. ✗ Belts and chains give the same type of drive. ✓ Belt drives can slip under load (not positive drive); chain drives are positive (non-slip) but require lubrication a
Stretch & Challenge (Grade 8-9):
Synoptic links: explain how mechanical systems connects to another Engineering topic you have studied
Real-world: research one real-world use or example of mechanical systems
Critical: "What are the limitations of the models used in mechanical systems?"
Plenary (5 minutes)
