Key Fact: Permanent joints cannot be disassembled without damage: welding, brazing, soft soldering, riveting and adhesive bonding.
Key Fact: Temporary joints can be repeatedly assembled and disassembled: bolts, nuts, screws, clips and captive fasteners.
Key Fact: Welding fuses metals together by melting the parent material (and usually a filler rod); MIG, TIG and MMA are common arc welding processes.
Key Fact: Brazing joins metals by melting a filler (brass alloy, above 450 degrees C) that flows by capillary action between closely fitting parts.
Key Fact: Soft soldering joins metals with a tin-lead or lead-free alloy (below 450 degrees C); used for electronics and light sheet metal.

Exam Tips: Classify joints as permanent or temporary first — this is almost always required in exam answers. | When comparing welding processes, focus on: precision (TIG), speed (MIG), and material suitability. | The temperature distinction matters: brazing above 450 degrees C, soft soldering below 450 degrees C. | HAZ questions are common — explain that properties change due to thermal cycling, not direct melting. | Always justify joint choice by linking it to the application requirement (disassembly, strength, materials).
Common Errors: ✗ Brazing and welding are the same process. ✓ Welding melts the parent metal; brazing melts only the filler, which flows between the parts by capillary action without melting the parent. ✗ All rivets require access to both sides. ✓ Blind (pop) rivets are installed from one side only; they are designed for applications where only one side is accessible. ✗ Soft soldered joints are strong enough for structural applications. ✓ Soft solder joints are relatively weak and should only be used for electrical connections, plumbing or light non-structural assemblies. ✗ Welding always produces a joint stronger than the parent metal. ✓ While the weld itself can be strong, the HAZ is often weaker than the
