Attempt a past-paper style question on electrical systems from the exam board past paper finder (see Resources), then mark it against the scheme.

Exam Tips: Always show your working in circuit calculations: write the formula, substitute values and include units. | Relay questions are common: explain the control circuit (low power) and load circuit (high power) separately. | Distinguish clearly between AC (mains, reverses direction) and DC (batteries, one direction). | In safety questions, always link the safety device to how it protects the user (e.g. 'fuse melts to break the circuit'). | Power calculations using P = VI are frequently examined — memorise all three forms of the power equation.
Common Errors: ✗ A higher voltage always means more danger. ✓ Voltage alone is not dangerous; it is the current that flows through the body that causes harm. However, higher voltage can drive more current through a given resistance, which is why mains voltage is dangerous. ✗ Fuses protect the user from electric shock. ✓ Fuses protect the equipment and wiring from overheating and fire; RCDs protect the user from electric shock by detecting earth leakage. ✗ In a parallel circuit, the current is the same through each branch. ✓ In parallel, the voltage is the same across each branch but the current splits depending on each branch's resistance. ✗ Batteries provide AC power. ✓ Batteries provide DC (direct curren
