Lesson 1: Introduction: circuit construction & pcb design

Duration: 50 minutes

Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Quick Recall

Write down everything you already know about circuit construction & pcb design. Then check against the key terms: key terms from circuit construction & pcb design. Use a mini-whiteboard or paper.

Main Content (35 minutes)

Parent/Teacher Guide:
Before lesson: Read the script below. Pre-teach key vocab: key terms from circuit construction & pcb design.
If stuck: Re-read the revision notes (link above), then break the content into smaller steps.
Extension: See the Stretch & Challenge ideas in Lesson 4.
Teaching Script (35 mins):
Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: circuit construction & pcb design. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Electronics because the ideas here recur across the spec."
Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words.
Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance.
Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.

Lesson 2: Core Concepts: circuit construction & pcb design

Duration: 50 minutes

Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Review Previous Lesson

Quick recap: write 3 key points from Lesson 1 on circuit construction & pcb design. Check them against the notes below.

Main Content (35 minutes)

Key Fact: A breadboard provides a solderless prototyping platform with internal spring contacts connecting rows and columns.
Key Fact: Breadboard connections are temporary and suitable for testing circuit designs before permanent construction.
Key Fact: Stripboard (Veroboard) has copper tracks in rows; tracks must be cut to isolate sections where connections are not wanted.
Key Fact: PCB design involves creating a layout with copper tracks that connect component pads according to the circuit schematic.
Key Fact: PCB design rules include: adequate track width for current, sufficient clearance between tracks, and correct pad sizes.
Key Fact: Soldering creates a permanent electrical and mechanical joint; a good solder joint is shiny, concave and covers both pad and lead.

Extended Answer

Extended question: Full-Mark Response Describe the process of constructing a circuit from prototype to PCB, including the role of breadboarding, stripboard construction, PCB design rules and soldering technique. <div class="

Circuit construction typically follows three stages: breadboard prototyping, stripboard construction and PCB manufacture. A breadboard allows solderless, temporary connections for initial testing and debugging of the circuit design. Once the design is verified, a stripboard (Veroboard) can be used for a semi-permanent version: components are soldered onto the board and copper tracks are cut with a spot-face cutter to isolate sections where no connection should exist. For production or a professional finish, a PCB is designed using CAD software. Key PCB design rules include: making track widths adequate for the current (wider for power rails), maintaining sufficient clearance between tracks to prevent shorts, placing components to follow signal flow from input to output, and positioning decoupling capacitors close to ICs. Soldering requires heating both the pad and component lead simultaneously with the iron, then applying solder to the joint (not the iron tip), allowing it to flow, then removing solder first and the iron second. A good joint is shiny and concave; a dry joint (dull and granular) results from insufficient heating and must be reworked.

Exam Tips: When describing soldering, always mention heating both the pad and the lead before applying solder. | List at least three PCB design rules: track width, clearance, pad size, component orientation. | Know the visual difference: a good joint is shiny and concave; a dry joint is dull and granular. | For breadboard questions, explain the internal connections (rows linked, columns linked for power rails). | Mention the purpose of a solder mask and silk screen layer when describing PCB construction.
Common Errors: ✗ Applying solder to the iron tip instead of the joint. ✓ Heat the pad and lead with the iron, then apply solder directly to the joint — not to the iron tip. ✗ Forgetting to cut stripboard tracks where isolation is needed. ✓ Tracks on stripboard are continuous; use a drill bit or track cutter to break the track at points where no connection should exist. ✗ Making PCB tracks too narrow for the current they must carry. ✓ Use appropriate track widths: typically 0.25 mm for signals, 1 mm or wider for power tracks carrying higher current. ✗ Placing decoupling capacitors far from the IC they serve. ✓ Decoupling capacitors must be placed as close as possible to the IC power pins to minimise inducta
Stretch & Challenge (Grade 8-9):
 • Synoptic links: explain how circuit construction & pcb design connects to another Electronics topic you have studied
 • Real-world: research one real-world use or example of circuit construction & pcb design
 • Critical: "What are the limitations of the models used in circuit construction & pcb design?"
