Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Review Previous Lesson
Quick recap: write 3 key points from Lesson 1 on brecht and epic theatre. Check them against the notes below.
Main Content (35 minutes)
Key Fact: Verfremdungseffekt (V-effect / alienation effect): making the familiar strange so the audience THINKS rather than feels — prevents emotional absorption.
Key Fact: Gestus: a combination of gesture and social attitude — reveals the character's social and political position, not their psychology.
Key Fact: Episodic structure: each scene stands alone — prevents narrative immersion, encourages critical comparison between scenes.
Key Fact: Placards and narration: tell the audience what will happen before it does — removes suspense, forces attention onto HOW and WHY.
Key Fact: Historicisation: setting the play in a different historical period — shows that society can change, encouraging political action.
Drama Exam Tips: For Brecht questions, always link technique to PURPOSE. Every Brechtian technique exists to create the V-effect and make the audience think critically. Never describe a technique without explaining its political purpose. E.g. 'Placards are used not for information but to remove suspense so the audience focuses on the social message.'

Practice (10 minutes)
Q: Explain the purpose of Brecht's alienation effect and describe three techniques he uses to achieve it.
Answer: V-effect stops emotional identification so the audience analyses the social message. Three techniques: placards (announce content), direct address (break fiction), episodic structure (prevent immersion). Each technique disrupts naturalistic illusion.

Your student teaches the key points back to you without looking. Fill any gaps immediately.
Lesson 3: Application: brecht and epic theatre
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Quick Recall
Recall the key terms: Drama Exam Tips. Define each in one sentence.
Main Content (35 minutes)
Parent/Teacher Guide: Let your student attempt each question alone first, then compare with the model answer. Award method marks for correct working even if the final answer is wrong.
Q1: Explain the purpose of Brecht's alienation effect and describe three techniques he uses to achieve it.
Answer: V-effect stops emotional identification so the audience analyses the social message. Three techniques: placards (announce content), direct address (break fiction), episodic structure (prevent immersion). Each technique disrupts naturalistic illusion.
Q2: What is gestus and how does it differ from a naturalistic approach to character?
Answer: Gestus combines gesture with social attitude — it shows the character's social position, not inner psychology. Naturalism explores inner truth; gestus reveals political truth. E.g. a boss's gestus shows power relations, not personality.
Q3: How would you stage a scene using Brechtian techniques to make the audience think critically about a social issue?
Answer: A practical answer showing: placard before scene, narration, direct address, simple set with exposed equipment, gestus-based performance, song interruption. Each technique linked to the social issue being examined.

Lesson 4: Exam Practice: brecht and epic theatre
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Command Words
Review what these command words require: state (one point), describe (say what happens), explain (say why), compare (both sides), evaluate (judgement).
Main Content (35 minutes)
Extended Answer
Extended question: Full-Mark Response How would you use Brechtian techniques to stage a scene that explores social inequality? Justify each technique with reference to Brecht's theories. <div class="
A grade 9 response will: name at least four Brechtian techniques; explain the theory behind each; demonstrate practical staging decisions; link each technique to the V-effect; show how the techniques work together to create critical engagement; evaluate their effectiveness. Mark scheme: Brechtian questions test AO1 (practitioner terminology), AO2 (analysing how techniques communicate meaning), and AO3/AO4...
Exam Tips: Always use the German term 'Verfremdungseffekt' (or V-effect) — examiners reward precision | Brecht is about THINKING not FEELING — always contrast with Stanislavski | Show practical application — how would you actually use Brechtian techniques? | Gestus is NOT just gesture — it's gesture + social meaning
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: Brecht's alienation effect means making the play boring so the audience doesn't care about the characters. Correct: The V-effect is NOT about making the audience not care — it's about changing HOW they care. Instead of emotional identification (feeling FOR the character), the audience achieves critical distance (thinking ABOUT the issues). Brecht wanted active, engaged audiences — not bored ones.
