Lesson 1: Introduction: analysing live theatre
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Quick Recall
Write down everything you already know about analysing live theatre. Then check against the key terms: Drama Exam Tips. Use a mini-whiteboard or paper.
Main Content (35 minutes)
Parent/Teacher Guide: Before lesson: Read the script below. Pre-teach key vocab: Drama Exam Tips. If stuck: Re-read the revision notes (link above), then break the content into smaller steps. Extension: See the Stretch & Challenge ideas in Lesson 4.
Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: analysing live theatre. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Drama because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance. Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.

Lesson 2: Core Concepts: analysing live theatre
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Review Previous Lesson
Quick recap: write 3 key points from Lesson 1 on analysing live theatre. Check them against the notes below.
Main Content (35 minutes)
Key Fact: Note-taking: write DURING the performance — focus on specific moments, not general impressions.
Key Fact: Four areas to analyse: performance (acting), design (set, costume, lighting, sound), direction (staging, pacing), and overall intention.
Key Fact: Always identify WHAT you saw, HOW it was done, and WHAT EFFECT it had on the audience.
Key Fact: Use precise terminology: 'proscenium arch' not 'normal stage'; 'gobo' not 'light pattern'; 'blocking' not 'where they stood'.
Key Fact: Structure your notes: moment → technique → effect — this directly transfers to exam writing.
Drama Exam Tips: For live theatre questions, use the SEE framework for every point: State the technique ('The designer used a gobo to project tree shadows'), Evidence from the production ('During the forest scene, the shadows moved as the lighting state shifted'), Effect on audience ('creating an eerie, oppressive atmosphere that reflected the character's psychological state'). Always link to the production's intention.

Q: What should you focus on when taking notes during a live theatre performance?
Answer: Specific moments, not general impressions. Record: what happened, which techniques were used, how the audience responded. Focus on performance (vocal/physical choices), design (set, lighting, costume, sound), direction (staging, pacing). Use precise terminology.
Plenary (5 minutes)
Explain Back
Your student teaches the key points back to you without looking. Fill any gaps immediately.
Lesson 3: Application: analysing live theatre
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Quick Recall
Recall the key terms: Drama Exam Tips. Define each in one sentence.
Main Content (35 minutes)
Parent/Teacher Guide: Let your student attempt each question alone first, then compare with the model answer. Award method marks for correct working even if the final answer is wrong.
Q1: What should you focus on when taking notes during a live theatre performance?
Answer: Specific moments, not general impressions. Record: what happened, which techniques were used, how the audience responded. Focus on performance (vocal/physical choices), design (set, lighting, costume, sound), direction (staging, pacing). Use precise terminology.
Q2: Explain the difference between DESCRIBING a moment and ANALYSING it. Why does analysis score higher marks?
Answer: Description: 'The actor shouted loudly.' Analysis: 'The actor increased volume to a shout and broke previously measured pacing, conveying the character's loss of control and shocking the audience into attention — this marked the peripeteia of the scene.' Analysis earns marks because it explains MEANING and EFFECT.
Q3: How would you structure your analysis of a key moment from a production you have seen?
Answer: Identify the moment precisely; describe the theatrical techniques used; explain the intended effect on the audience; evaluate how successful the choices were; link to the production's overall intentions. Use the SEE framework throughout.
Plenary (5 minutes)
Error Review
Review any questions answered incorrectly. Identify whether the error was knowledge, method, or reading the question.
Lesson 4: Exam Practice: analysing live theatre
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Command Words
Review what these command words require: state (one point), describe (say what happens), explain (say why), compare (both sides), evaluate (judgement).
Main Content (35 minutes)
Extended Answer
Extended question: Full-Mark Response Analyse how the performers and designers created a specific atmosphere in a production you have seen. Use precise theatrical terminology. <div class="
A grade 9 response will: identify a specific moment with atmosphere; describe the performance techniques used (vocal/physical); describe the design techniques used (set/lighting/sound/costume); explain the combined effect on the audience; use precise terminology throughout; evaluate the effectiveness of the choices; link to the production's overall intention. Mark scheme: Live theatre analysis is tested in Component 1 Section B (Understanding Drama written exam). It assesses AO2 (analyse an...
Exam Tips: Write notes DURING the performance, not after — details fade quickly | Focus on SPECIFIC moments, not general impressions of the whole show | Always use precise theatrical terminology — examiners reward vocabulary | Link every observation to EFFECT on the audience
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: A live theatre review is just saying whether you liked the show or not — giving your personal opinion. Correct: A live theatre review is ANALYTICAL, not opinion-based. You must identify specific theatrical choices, explain how they created meaning and evaluate their effectiveness using evidence. 'I liked it' is irrelevant; 'The designer's use of cold blue lighting in the isolation scene connoted emotional distance and effectively supported the production's theme of alienation' is analytical.
