Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: environmental, ecological and social issues. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Design and Technology because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance. Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.

Answer: Linear: extract raw materials, manufacture phone, use for 2-3 years, dispose in landfill — resources flow one way. Circular: design phone for modular repair (Fairphone), use recycled aluminium and rare earths, offer trade-in for refurbishment, design for disassembly so components can be recovered — resources cycle continuously.

A grade 9 response will: analyse the current cup (paper lined with polyethylene — cannot be recycled easily, 2.5 billion used annually in UK); calculate the LCA impact (tree harvesting, waterproof lining manufacture, transport, landfill); apply circular economy principles — design a reusable cup system (e.g. deposit-return scheme with durable recycled polypropylene cups, collected, washed and redistributed); discuss the 6 Rs applied; consider social barriers (convenience culture) and economic factors (initial cost vs long-term savings); reference real examples (Frugalpac, KeepCup, deposit schemes); conclude with a justified proposal that balances environmental benefit with practical adoption.

Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: Recycling is the most important thing a designer can do to protect the environment. Correct: Recycling is the LAST of the 6 Rs — it requires energy, reduces material quality (downcycling), and does not reduce initial consumption. Rethink (do we need this product?), Refuse (avoid unnecessary materials), and Reduce (use less material) are far more effective because they prevent waste from being created in the first place. Designers should prioritise higher Rs before considering recycling.
