Key Fact: Exam structure: 2 hours, 100 marks. Section A - Core Technical Principles (20 marks, short answer), Section B - Specialist Technical Principles (30 marks, short and extended), Section C - Designing and Making Principles (50 marks, extended response).
Key Fact: Command words: 'State' - brief factual answer (1-2 marks). 'Describe' - say what happens (2-4 marks). 'Explain' - describe AND give reasons (3-6 marks). 'Evaluate' - give both sides and reach a justified conclusion (6-10 marks). 'Justify' - give reasons for your choice (4-6 marks).
Key Fact: Time management: 2 hours for 100 marks = 1.2 minutes per mark. Section A: 24 minutes. Section B: 36 minutes. Section C: 60 minutes. Leave 10 minutes for checking.
Key Fact: Section C strategy: this section tests AO3 most heavily - worth 50 marks. Read the context carefully, identify the user and their needs, use the SEE framework (Social, Economic, Environmental) for evaluation, always justify conclusions with specific evidence.
Key Fact: Common errors: not reading the question carefully, vague answers without specific examples, writing everything you know instead of selecting relevant information, not evaluating (giving one side only), ignoring the command word.
D&T Exam Tips: Universal exam approach: 1) Read the question twice, identify the command word and topic, 2) Plan your answer structure (30 seconds), 3) Write using specialist vocabulary and specific examples, 4) For evaluation: present both sides, reach a justified conclusion, 5) Check your answer addresses the question asked.

Answer: Plan: 1) Define PP and its key properties (thermoplastic, food-safe grades, chemical resistant, lightweight, microwave-safe PP5, low cost). 2) Advantages for food container: food-safe, chemical resistant, lightweight, dishwasher safe, inexpensive, recyclable. 3) Disadvantages: can warp at high temperatures, stains with some foods, scratches over time, may absorb odours, limited transparency. 4) Justified conclusion: PP is highly suitable for cold/warm food storage and microwave use (PP5 grade), but not for oven use.
Q3: A student writes one-sided answers that only give advantages. Explain why this loses marks and how they should improve.
Answer: Evaluation requires BOTH sides - advantages AND disadvantages - plus a justified conclusion. One-sided answers score maximum half marks because they do not demonstrate AO3. Improvement: always use 'however', 'on the other hand', 'a limitation is' to introduce disadvantages. Then conclude: 'Overall, [material/process] is suitable because [specific reason] despite [acknowledged limitation].'

Exam Tips: Read the command word FIRST - it tells you how much depth is needed | For 'evaluate' questions, always give a BALANCED answer: advantages, disadvantages, conclusion | For Section C, annotate the context sheet - highlight user needs and constraints
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: In an exam, you should write everything you know about a topic to show the examiner how much you have revised. Correct: Examiners mark what is RELEVANT to the question, not how much you write. Writing everything you know wastes time and often misses the mark because you do not focus on what was asked. A focused, specific 6-mark answer always outscores a rambling, unfocused page of text.
