Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: developing and communicating ideas. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Design and Technology because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance. A grade 9 response will: produce a sketch showing the lamp's form (base, articulated arm, shade), annotate with materials (weighted steel base, aluminium arm, polymer shade), dimensions (base 200 mm, arm reach 400 mm), function (adjustable arm, touch dimmer). CAD development: 1) Parametric modelling - adjust proportions, test geometry. 2) FEA - simulate stress on arm joint, simulate thermal performance of LED housing.
Exam Tips: Always annotate sketches - an unannotated sketch scores minimal marks | Know the UK convention: third-angle projection | Explain the PURPOSE of each drawing type - when would you use it and why?
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: CAD has replaced sketching because it is more precise and professional, so sketching is no longer important. Correct: CAD and sketching are complementary, not competing. Sketching excels at rapid concept generation. CAD excels at precision, modification, virtual testing and manufacturing output. The design process moves from sketching (divergent - many ideas) to CAD (convergent - refining the best idea). A designer who skips sketching produces fewer, less creative solutions.
