Key Fact: Design brief: a concise statement of the problem to be solved - identifies the user, the need and the context. Not a solution - a starting point.
Key Fact: Design specification: a list of measurable criteria the product must meet - function, target user, dimensions, materials, cost, safety, aesthetics, environmental impact. Must be testable.
Key Fact: User research: interviews, questionnaires, observation, focus groups - reveals real needs, not assumptions. Ask open questions, observe users in context, identify pain points.
Key Fact: Market research: analyse competing products - features, price points, materials, strengths, weaknesses. Identify gaps in the market and opportunities for innovation.

Design specification: a detailed, measurable list of CRITERIA the final product must meet. The brief asks 'what is the problem?'; the specification answers 'what must the solution achieve?'

Q3: A designer wants to create a new type of school bag. Describe three research methods they should use and explain what each would reveal.

Answer: 1) User interviews with students - reveal what they carry, pain points, preferences. 2) Observation of students using bags - reveals actual behaviour vs what they say. 3) Competitor analysis - identifies feature gaps, price points, common failure points.

Specification: 1) Carry up to 10 kg. 2) Fit bicycles with 20-28 inch wheels without tools. 3) Maintain stability at 15 mph. 4) Weather-resistant (IPX4). 5) Retail cost under 40 GBP. 6) Device weight under 1.5 kg when empty. Research: 1) Observation at supermarkets. 2) Interviews with cyclists about grocery volumes and pain points.

Exam Tips: A design brief states the PROBLEM, not the solution - 'design a storage device' not 'design a shelf' | Specification points must be MEASURABLE - include numbers, sizes, weights, costs | Always link research methods to the specific information they will reveal
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: A design specification should describe exactly what the product will look like so the designer knows what to make. Correct: A specification defines what the product must ACHIEVE, not what it looks like. 'The product must hold at least 5 kg of books' is a specification point (testable, measurable). 'The product will be a blue wooden shelf with three compartments' is a design decision, not a specification. Specifying the solution too early constrains creativity.
