Main Content (35 minutes)
Parent/Teacher Guide: Before lesson: Read the script below. Pre-teach key vocab: GCSE Computer Science Exam Tips. If stuck: Re-read the revision notes (link above), then break the content into smaller steps. Extension: See the Stretch & Challenge ideas in Lesson 4.
Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: network types & topologies. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Computer Science because the ideas here recur across the spec." Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance. Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.

Main Content (35 minutes)
Definition: A computer network is two or more computers and other devices connected together to share data, information, and resources.
Definition: A PAN is a network that connects devices within a very small range, typically within a few metres of an individual person.
Definition: A LAN is a network that covers a small geographical area, such as a single building, office, school, or home. LANs are typically owned and managed by the organisation that uses them.
Definition: A WAN is a network that covers a large geographical area, such as a city, country, or the whole world. WANs typically connect multiple LANs together over long distances.
Definition: A network topology is the physical or logical arrangement of devices and connections in a network. The two main topologies you need to know are star and mesh.
GCSE Computer Science Exam Tips: LAN = small area, WAN = large area. Topologies: star, mesh, ring, bus — know advantages/disadvantages of each. Client-server: central server, security, backup. P2P: no central server, each node equal, less secure. Internet ≠ WWW. For comparison, give balanced points on both sides. For scenario questions, justify your choice with specific reasons relating to the scenario.

Parent/Teacher Guide: Let your student attempt each question alone first, then compare with the model answer. Award method marks for correct working even if the final answer is wrong.
Q1: Define PAN, LAN, and WAN, giving an example of each.
Answer: PAN: Personal Area Network, very small range (under 10m), connects personal devices like phone to headphones. LAN: Local Area Network, covers a single building/site, e.g. a school network. WAN: Wide Area Network, covers large geographical area, e.g. the internet.
Q2: Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi, giving two advantages and two disadvantages of each.
Answer: Ethernet advantages: faster and more reliable, more secure (physical cable needed). Ethernet disadvantages: limited mobility, requires cabling to each device. Wi-Fi advantages: no cables needed, devices can move freely. Wi-Fi disadvantages: less secure (signals can be intercepted), signal can be blocked or interfered with.
Q3: Give three advantages and three disadvantages of using a computer network.
Answer: Advantages: resource sharing (printers), file sharing between users, centralised backups. Disadvantages: security risks (malware spreads), cost of setup and maintenance, if server fails many users affected.
Q4: Compare star and mesh topologies. What is the main advantage of each?
Answer: Star: all devices connect to a central hub/switch. Main advantage: easy to add devices, one cable failure only affects one device. Mesh: devices have multiple interconnections. Main advantage: no single point of failure - highly reliable because data can route around failed connections.
Q5: Why is fibre optic cable used for backbone connections rather than copper Ethernet?
Answer: Fibre optic uses light signals through glass fibres, giving much higher speeds, ability to transmit over much longer distances without signal loss, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Copper Ethernet is limited by distance and is affected by interference.
