Tier: Foundation and Higher
Duration: 50 minutes per lesson (200 minutes total)
Exam Boards: AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, CCEA

Learning Objectives

Prerequisites

Materials & Equipment

Lesson 1: Introduction: hardware & software

Duration: 50 minutes

Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Quick Recall

Write down everything you already know about hardware & software. Then check against the key terms: Key Concept, GCSE Computer Science Exam Tips. Use a mini-whiteboard or paper.

Main Content (35 minutes)

Parent/Teacher Guide:
Before lesson: Read the script below. Pre-teach key vocab: Key Concept, GCSE Computer Science Exam Tips.
If stuck: Re-read the revision notes (link above), then break the content into smaller steps.
Extension: See the Stretch & Challenge ideas in Lesson 4.
Teaching Script (35 mins):
Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: hardware & software. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. It connects to the rest of Computer Science because the ideas here recur across the spec."
Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words.
Mins 20-30 - Guided Practice: Model the worked example together, then let your student attempt the first practice question with guidance.
Mins 30-35 - Independent Practice: 2-3 practice questions from Lesson 3 below, with immediate feedback.
First Look

Start with the revision notes summary, then attempt: Define the terms hardware and software.

Plenary (5 minutes)

Check Out

Your student states one thing they learned and one question they still have about hardware & software.

Lesson 2: Core Concepts: hardware & software

Duration: 50 minutes

Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Review Previous Lesson

Quick recap: write 3 key points from Lesson 1 on hardware & software. Check them against the notes below.

Main Content (35 minutes)

Definition: Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer system - the parts you can see and touch. Hardware includes all the electronic and mechanical parts that make up the computer.
Definition: Software refers to the programs, instructions, and data that tell the hardware what to do. Software is not physical - it is the set of instructions that the hardware executes.
Key Concept: Hardware and software are interdependent. Hardware needs software to give it instructions; software needs hardware to execute those instructions. Neither can function without the other.
Definition: System software manages and controls the hardware and provides a platform for application software to run on. It runs in the background and the user may not directly interact with it.
Definition: Application software performs specific tasks for the user. It sits on top of the system software and is what the user directly interacts with.
GCSE Computer Science Exam Tips: Hardware = physical, Software = programs. System software vs Application software — learn examples of each. RAM: volatile, read-write, working storage. ROM: non-volatile, read-only, boot instructions. When comparing components, use a table format. For performance questions, consider ALL relevant components, not just the CPU. Always explain WHY a component is needed, not just what it does.

Practice (10 minutes)

Q: Define the terms hardware and software.

Answer: Hardware is the physical components of a computer system (the parts you can touch). Software is the programs and instructions that tell the hardware what to do (not physical).

Plenary (5 minutes)

Explain Back

Your student teaches the key points back to you without looking. Fill any gaps immediately.

Lesson 3: Application: hardware & software

Duration: 50 minutes

Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Quick Recall

Recall the key terms: Key Concept, GCSE Computer Science Exam Tips. Define each in one sentence.

Main Content (35 minutes)

Parent/Teacher Guide: Let your student attempt each question alone first, then compare with the model answer. Award method marks for correct working even if the final answer is wrong.

Q1: Define the terms hardware and software.

Answer: Hardware is the physical components of a computer system (the parts you can touch). Software is the programs and instructions that tell the hardware what to do (not physical).

Q2: Explain why hardware and software are interdependent.

Answer: Hardware needs software to provide it with instructions to execute; without software, hardware has nothing to run. Software needs hardware to execute its instructions; without hardware, software has nothing to run on. Neither can function alone.

Q3: Classify each as input, output, or storage: keyboard, monitor, SSD, scanner, speaker, USB drive.

Answer: Keyboard = input, Monitor = output, SSD = storage, Scanner = input, Speaker = output, USB drive = storage.

Q4: What is the difference between system software and application software? Give two examples of each.

Answer: System software manages the hardware and provides a platform for applications (e.g. operating system, device driver). Application software performs specific tasks for the user (e.g. word processor, web browser).

Q5: Explain the difference between general-purpose and special-purpose application software.

Answer: General-purpose software can be used for many different tasks (e.g. a word processor can write letters, essays, reports). Special-purpose software is designed for one specific task (e.g. a payroll system that only calculates wages).

Plenary (5 minutes)

Error Review

Review any questions answered incorrectly. Identify whether the error was knowledge, method, or reading the question.

Lesson 4: Exam Practice: hardware & software

Duration: 50 minutes

Starter Activity (5 minutes)

Command Words

Review what these command words require: state (one point), describe (say what happens), explain (say why), compare (both sides), evaluate (judgement).

Main Content (35 minutes)

Extended Answer

Extended question: Full-Mark Response Explain the difference between RAM and ROM, and state why both are needed in a computer system. [4 marks] <div class="

RAM (Random Access Memory) is volatile — it loses its contents when power is switched off. It stores the operating system, running programs, and data currently being processed. It is read-write, meaning the CPU can both read from and write to RAM. ROM (Read Only Memory) is non-volatile — it retains its contents when power is switched off. It stores the BIOS/boot instructions needed to start the computer. It is read-only, meaning the CPU can read from it but cannot write to it. Both are needed because ROM provides the startup instructions that load the OS into RAM, and RAM provides the working space for the OS and programs to run. Without ROM, the computer could not boot; without RAM, no programs could run.

Exam Tips: Always define hardware as "physical components" and software as "programs/instructions" | When asked about the relationship, emphasise interdependence | Know your input/output/storage device classifications | Be clear on system vs application software with examples | A touchscreen is BOTH an input and output device | Remember: data flows IN through input devices and OUT through output devices
Common Errors: ✗ Thinking hardware and software are interchangeable terms ✓ Hardware is the physical components you can touch (CPU, RAM, mouse). Software is the programs and instructions that tell the hardware what to do. ✗ Confusing system software and application software ✓ System software manages the computer (OS, utilities, drivers). Application software performs user tasks (word processor, games, browsers). ✗ Believing RAM and ROM serve the same purpose ✓ RAM is volatile (loses data when powered off), used for temporary working storage. ROM is non-volatile (retains data), stores boot-up instructions and firmware. ✗ Thinking the CPU is the only component that affects computer performance ✓ Performance
Stretch & Challenge (Grade 8-9):
  • Synoptic links: explain how hardware & software connects to another Computer Science topic you have studied
  • Real-world: research one real-world use or example of hardware & software
  • Critical: "What are the limitations of the models used in hardware & software?"

Plenary (5 minutes)

Assessment Criteria
  • Got it: Confident explanation + correct worked examples
  • Getting there: Main points OK, needs support with detail
  • Not yet: Confused on key concepts - re-run Lesson 2
