Main Content (35 minutes)

Non-renewable energy resource: A resource that will run out one day because it is being used up faster than it can be replaced. Examples: fossil fuels and nuclear fuel.
Renewable energy resource: A resource that will never run out (or can be replaced within a human lifetime). Examples: solar, wind, hydroelectric, tidal, geothermal, biomass, wave.
Fossil fuels: Coal, oil and natural gas — formed from the remains of ancient organisms over millions of years. They are non-renewable and produce carbon dioxide when burned.
Current UK energy mix: The UK generates most of its electricity from natural gas, with a growing proportion from renewables (especially wind and solar). Coal use has dropped significantly. Nuclear provides a steady base load.
Fossil fuels remain dominant because: they are reliable (available on demand), the infrastructure already exists (power stations, gas pipelines, petrol stations), and they are relatively cheap to set up compared to some renewable alternatives.
We need to transition to renewables because: fossil fuels are finite and will run out, burning fossil fuels releases CO₂ which causes climate change, and pollution from fossil fuels harms health and the environment.

Answer: A renewable energy resource is one that will never run out (or can be replaced within a human lifetime). Examples: solar, wind. A non-renewable resource is one that will run out because it is being used faster than it can be replaced. Examples: coal, natural gas.

Q2: Foundation Give two reasons why the UK still uses fossil fuels for electricity generation.

Answer: 1) Fossil fuels are reliable — they can produce electricity on demand, unlike some renewables. 2) The infrastructure already exists (power stations, gas pipelines) so it is cheaper to continue using them than to build new renewable infrastructure.

Q3: Foundation Explain why tidal energy is more reliable than wind energy.

Answer: Tidal energy is more reliable because tides are predictable and happen twice daily regardless of weather. Wind energy depends on weather conditions — if there is no wind, no electricity is generated.

Answer: The country could use wind and solar (both quick to build, no CO₂), hydroelectric (reliable backup), and possibly nuclear (reliable, no CO₂, but expensive and slow to build). Challenges: (1) renewables are intermittent, so need energy storage or backup; (2) building new infrastructure is expensive; (3) some renewables need specific geography (hydro needs rivers/hills); (4) nuclear takes many years to build and produces radioactive waste.

Q5: Higher Explain why nuclear power is classified as non-renewable even though it does not produce CO₂ during operation.

Answer: Nuclear power is non-renewable because it uses uranium fuel, which is a finite resource that will eventually run out. It cannot be replaced within a human lifetime. Even though it does not produce CO₂, the fuel supply is limited, which is the definition of non-renewable.

Q6: Higher Compare the environmental impact of hydroelectric power and wind power. Include both positive and negative effects.

Answer: Hydroelectric positive: no CO₂ emissions, reliable. Negative: building dams floods valleys, destroys habitats, displaces communities. Wind power positive: no CO₂, minimal land impact (land can still be farmed). Negative: visual pollution, noise, can kill birds and bats, unreliable without wind. Both are renewable and do not produce CO₂ during operation.

Arguments for switching entirely to renewables: (1) Fossil fuels are finite and will eventually run out, so we must transition to sustainable sources. (2) Burning fossil fuels releases CO₂, which is the main cause of climate change — renewables produce no CO₂ during operation. (3) Using renewables improves energy security by reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels, making the UK less vulnerable to supply disruptions and price changes.
