Teaching Script (35 mins): Mins 0-5 - Hook: "Today: c1 atoms and elements. By the end you will be able to answer exam questions on it unaided. Mins 5-20 - Direct Instruction: Work through the core ideas below one at a time; after each, ask your student to explain it back in their own words. Main Content (35 minutes)
Atom: The smallest particle of an element that can still be recognised as that element. Atoms are the building blocks of all matter.
Element: A substance made up of only one type of atom. Each element has a unique atomic number and is listed on the Periodic Table.
Compound: A substance made from two or more elements that are chemically combined in fixed proportions. Compounds can only be separated into their elements by chemical reactions.
Mixture: Two or more substances that are mixed together but are not chemically combined. Mixtures can be separated by physical methods such as filtration, distillation or chromatography.
Chemical symbol: A one- or two-letter abbreviation used to represent an element (e.g. O for oxygen, Na for sodium).
Law of conservation of mass: No atoms are created or destroyed in a chemical reaction, so the number of atoms of each element must be the same on both sides of the equation.

Answer: 2Ca(s) + O₂(g) → 2CaO(s). Calcium is a solid metal, oxygen is a gas, and calcium oxide is a solid.
Q5: Higher Balance the following equation: Al + O₂ → Al₂O₃
Answer: 4Al + 3O₂ → 2Al₂O₃. Check: Left = Al: 4, O: 6; Right = Al: 4, O: 6. Balanced.
Q6: Foundation Give the chemical symbols for: sodium, potassium, iron, chlorine, calcium.
Answer: Sodium = Na, Potassium = K, Iron = Fe, Chlorine = Cl, Calcium = Ca. (Na and K come from their Latin names: natrium and kalium.)

An element is a substance made of only one type of atom and cannot be broken down chemically (e.g. Fe, O₂). A compound is a substance made from two or more elements chemically combined in fixed proportions; it can only be separated into elements by chemical reactions (e.g. H₂O always has 2 H : 1 O). A mixture contains two or more substances not chemically combined, so the substances retain their individual properties and proportions can vary; mixtures can be separated by physical methods such as filtration, distillation or chromatography. Mark scheme: 1 mark for each correct definition (element, compound, mixture — up to 3); 1 mark for stating compounds have fixed proportions; 1 mark for stating mixtures have variable proportions; 1 mark for correct separation methods for each; 1 mark for using examples.
Exam Tips: Learn the definition of compound precisely: examiners look for "chemically combined" and "fixed proportions" - both must be mentioned for full marks | When asked about the difference between mixtures and compounds, always state at least two differences for full marks | Never change subscripts in a formula when balancing - only add numbers in front of formulae | Always check your balanced equation by counting atoms of each element on both sides | State symbols: remember (aq) means dissolved in water, not just "watery" - it is distinct from (l) | Common mistake: writing Na for sodium is correct, but writing NA or nA is wrong - symbols have a capital letter first, lowercase second
