The Roman conquest brought significant material benefits to Britain, but these were unevenly distributed and came at considerable cost in lost independence and cultural disruption. Benefits included roads connecting communities, towns with baths and forums, villas with Mediterranean-style comfort, expanded trade, and writing, coinage and Roman law creating a more complex society. Wealthy Britons who built villas enjoyed higher living standards. However, benefits were unequal — the elite gained most while ordinary farmers saw little improvement. The conquest was brutal — Boudica's revolt showed Roman savagery, and Celtic sacred sites were destroyed. Taxes extracted wealth for Rome. Slavery extracted people. Romanisation was not universally desired. In the north beyond Hadrian's Wall, Roman benefits barely reached. Overall, material advances primarily benefited the elite and cooperative elements, while costs — loss of independence, heavy taxation, cultural erosion and brutality — were borne most heavily by those with least power.
