The Odyssey is fundamentally about homecoming (nostos) rather than adventure, though the adventures are essential to developing its themes. Homecoming is the poem's central purpose — every episode, character and theme serves Odysseus's return to Ithaca. The opening lines declare the subject as the man who strove to win his friends' return. Penelope's faithfulness, Telemachus's journey and the suitors' occupation all revolve around Odysseus's absence. Even the adventures serve homecoming: each monster tests whether his desire for nostos can overcome the temptations of forgetfulness, comfort and knowledge. The second half, set entirely in Ithaca, is purely about homecoming — the disguise, planning and violent reclamation. However, the adventures are not merely obstacles — they are what makes Odysseus the hero who deserves to return.
