Extended Answer

Extended question: Full-Mark Response How far does the homecoming of Odysseus show that cunning is more important than strength? (15 marks) <div class="

Odysseus's homecoming demonstrates that cunning is essential, but it also shows that physical strength remains crucial — both are necessary for a complete hero. The entire strategy of the homecoming is built on cunning: Odysseus arrives in disguise, gathers intelligence from Eumaeus, tests the suitors' character as a beggar, and coordinates the ambush with Telemachus in secret. Without this clever planning, the suitors' superior numbers would have overwhelmed him. Penelope's own cunning — the shroud trick and the bow contest — creates the perfect opportunity for Odysseus to strike. The bed test is the ultimate proof of identity through knowledge, not strength. However, physical strength is also indispensable. Only Odysseus can string the great bow, a feat of pure physical power that no suitor can match. The actual battle in the great hall requires fighting skill and endurance — Odysseus, Telemachus and the two loyal servants must kill over a hundred suitors. Athena's intervention provides crucial divine support, but the combat is real and physically demanding. The homecoming succeeds precisely because Odysseus combines both qualities: cunning creates the opportunity and physical st

Exam Tips: The recognition scene is the most important moment — analyse how identity is confirmed through knowledge, not just physical proof | The immovable bed is the key symbol — it represents the unbreakable bond of marriage | Compare the loyalty of Eumaeus with the disloyalty of the suitors and maidservants | The violence of the revenge scene is shocking — be prepared to discuss whether it is justified | Always link the homecoming to the wider themes of the poem: identity, loyalty, justice
Common Errors: ✗ Describing the killing of the suitors as murder without context ✓ In the Odyssey's moral world, the suitors' deaths are justified punishment (dike) for their violation of xenia, consumption of Odysseus's wealth and threat to his family ✗ Thinking Penelope immediately recognises Odysseus ✓ Penelope is cautious and tests him — the bed trick shows she will not be deceived, even by a god or a lookalike ✗ Forgetting the role of Telemachus in the revenge ✓ Telemachus actively participates — he locks the doors, arms the loyal servants and fights alongside his father ✗ Treating the ending as a simple happy conclusion ✓ The ending is ambiguous — Athena forces peace, but the families of the suitors
Stretch & Challenge (Grade 8-9):
 • Synoptic links: explain how homecoming & revenge connects to another Classical Civilisation topic you have studied
 • Real-world: research one real-world use or example of homecoming & revenge
 • Critical: "What are the limitations of the models used in homecoming & revenge?"
