Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Review Previous Lesson
Quick recap: write 3 key points from Lesson 1 on purpose of business and enterprise. Check them against the notes below.
Main Content (35 minutes)
Key Fact: Businesses provide goods (tangible products) and services (intangible products) to meet needs (essential) and wants (desirable but not essential).
Key Fact: Factors of production: land (natural resources), labour (human effort), capital (man-made resources), enterprise (risk-taking and organisation).
Key Fact: Opportunity cost: the benefit of the next best alternative foregone when making a decision - e.g. spending on new equipment means less available for marketing.
Key Fact: Three sectors: primary (extraction), secondary (manufacturing), tertiary (services). The UK economy is now largely tertiary (approx 80%).
Key Fact: Entrepreneur characteristics: risk-taker, creative, resilient, self-motivated, good communicator, decisive. Entrepreneurs spot gaps in the market and take calculated risks.
Business Exam Tips: When discussing business purpose, use the SEE framework: Social benefits (jobs, community), Economic benefits (wealth, tax revenue), Enterprise benefits (innovation, choice). Always link back to the specific business context given in the question.
Practice (10 minutes)
Q: Explain the difference between a need and a want, giving two examples of each.
Answer: A need is essential for survival (food, water, shelter, clothing). A want is desirable but not essential (mobile phone, holiday, branded clothing). Needs are limited; wants are unlimited - this creates the basic economic problem of scarcity.
Plenary (5 minutes)
Explain Back
Your student teaches the key points back to you without looking. Fill any gaps immediately.
Lesson 3: Application: purpose of business and enterprise

Quick Recall

Main Content (35 minutes)
Parent/Teacher Guide: Let your student attempt each question alone first, then compare with the model answer. Award method marks for correct working even if the final answer is wrong.
Q1: Explain the difference between a need and a want, giving two examples of each.
Answer: A need is essential for survival (food, water, shelter, clothing). A want is desirable but not essential (mobile phone, holiday, branded clothing). Needs are limited; wants are unlimited - this creates the basic economic problem of scarcity.
Q2: Describe the four factors of production and explain how they work together in a business.
Answer: Land = natural resources (oil, farmland, water). Labour = human effort (workers' skills and time). Capital = man-made resources used in production (machinery, tools, factories). Enterprise = the entrepreneur who organises the other factors and takes risks. All four are needed - e.g. a restaurant needs land (premises), labour (chefs, waiters), capital (ovens, tables), enterprise (owner who set it up).
Q3: An entrepreneur is considering leaving a secure job to start a business. Discuss the risks and rewards of this decision.
Answer: Risks: loss of regular income, personal savings invested, stress of uncertainty, possible business failure (20% of new businesses fail in first year). Rewards: potential for higher income, independence and flexibility, personal satisfaction, building an asset, creating jobs. A balanced answer weighs both and concludes with a justified view.

Lesson 4: Exam Practice: purpose of business and enterprise
Duration: 50 minutes
Starter Activity (5 minutes)
Command Words
Review what these command words require: state (one point), describe (say what happens), explain (say why), compare (both sides), evaluate (judgement).
Main Content (35 minutes)
Extended Answer
Extended question: Full-Mark Response Evaluate whether a stable job or starting a business is the better option for a 25-year-old with a business idea for an online clothing store. <div class="
A grade 9 response will: identify financial factors (salary vs uncertain income, start-up costs, savings needed); personal factors (risk tolerance, skills, support network); market factors (demand for online clothing, competition, growth of e-commerce); conclude with a justified recommendation based on specific circumstances - e.g. if they have savings, relevant skills and market research shows demand, the business may be worth the risk; if they lack savings and experience, starting part-time while employed reduces risk.
Exam Tips: Always define key terms before discussing them - 'needs are essentials for survival, wants are desirables' | Use the four factors of production framework when analysing any business scenario | Link opportunity cost to every business decision - 'if they spend on X, they cannot spend on Y'
Common Errors: Watch Out! Students often make mistakes here. Wrong: All entrepreneurs are wealthy people who start businesses because they want to be rich. Correct: Entrepreneurs start businesses for many reasons beyond money: independence, passion for a product/service, desire to make a difference, flexibility, dissatisfaction with current employment. Many entrepreneurs initially earn LESS than they would as employees - they accept lower short-term income for potential long-term reward and autonomy.

Synoptic links: explain how purpose of business and enterprise connects to another Business Studies topic you have studied
Real-world: research one real-world use or example of purpose of business and enterprise
Critical: "What are the limitations of the models used in purpose of business and enterprise?"
