Common Errors: ✗ Sparta was a democracy ✓ Sparta was a mixed constitution: monarchy (two kings), oligarchy (Gerousia and ephors) and limited democracy (apella). It was far from democratic — the citizen assembly had no power to debate or propose ✗ Helots were slaves like those in Athens ✓ Helots were state-owned serfs tied to the land, not privately owned chattel slaves. They could not be bought or sold individually and lived in family groups on the kleros (land allotment) ✗ All Spartan boys became full citizens ✓ Only those who successfully completed the agoge and were elected to a mess (syssitia) became homoioi. Some failed and became inferior hypomeiones (inferiors)
